Moments Easily Missed: The Rewatch Edition – Loyal to a Fault

Today we’re taking a closer look at 2×04 “Emergence” and the moment Ramse calls Cassie out for her treatment of Cole.

In this episode, Ramse has been sent from 2044 to 1944 to rescue Cole and Cassie after their tether is destroyed. While Cole is following up on a last-minute lead, Ramse and Cassie find themselves sharing a drink – an encounter which neither one is particularly thrilled about.

Cassie is ready to disregard everything Ramse wants to say to her (because what else could he offer by a criticism) but when he brings up her recent antagonism towards Cole she’s at a loss for words.

Ramse doesn’t look Cassie in the eye when he’s speaking to her, but his delivery is precise and cutting. Going right to the heart of the issue, he tells her that she needs to, “Forgive him, like he did me. Like he would for you.”

Ramse could quite easily make his attack on Cassie personal (she has used his son as leverage against him), but in taking the moral high ground and encouraging her to repair her fractured relationship with Cole (because he knows that Cole is in love with her) Ramse proves that he is a loving friend. What he’s really saying is that he is willing to put Cole’s happiness before his own feelings. That’s the mark of true friend, a brother.
