Moments Easily Missed: The Rewatch Edition – Two Coles on a Train

Today we’re taking a closer look at 3×08 “Masks”, and the moment when Cole is being assisted in a fight with Deacon – by a second version of himself.

We learned in “Mother” that the futuristic vests from Titan allow travelers to contact with other versions of themselves without causing a paradox. This was often used by Magdalena, who would travel back to warn herself about anything that jeopardised the safety of The Witness. Although the vest allows characters to come into contact with previous or future versions of themselves, this has not been common throughout the rest of the series.

In the opening scene of “Masks”, Deacon and Hannah confront Cole and Cassie on a train in 1945 just as the end of the Great War has been declared. While Hannah races to try and capture Cassie, Deacon and Cole are left to square off. Deacon seems to get the upper hand until another version of Cole appears. Two Coles are (obviously) better than one, and no match for Deacon. Still, who is this second Cole?

As neither of the two Coles speak to each other, we don’t know where or when the second Cole comes from. Seeing another Cole show up makes me wonder if the future Cole that we met in “Mother” is going to be unmasked as having done a bit more assisting. Time will tell.
