12 Monkeys is filled with moments between or beyond the dialogue—often the moments easily missed. I’d like to share a few of them with you so that we can fully appreciate them.
Today we’re taking a closer look at episode 1×03 “Cassandra Complex”. Both Cole and Cassie are in Haiti in 2014, where Cassie is chasing ghosts manifesting in the form of viral outbreaks of unknown origin, while Cole tries his very best to both find clues where the Night Room might be and avoid Cassie at any cost.
He chases Henri through narrow alleyways, and then he comes across the creepy monkey skull mounted on a metal structure as part of a shrine of some kind. Now, I will assume that you’ve all caught the significance of there being a monkey skull, but did you also catch the petals that are scattered around the assortment of other items?
Look closely. They bear a very close resemblance to the petals that the Army of the 12 Monkeys spreads around the people they kill (e.g. when Cassie finds Jeremy dead in his home). Coincidence? I think not.
Interestingly, neither of the two kinds of petals we see here seem to be jasmine or lavender, which are both mentioned a few times in connection with the Pallid Man. I’m not exactly sure what petals they are, but lavender has very small, purple flowers, and jasmine petals are white.
